A PROFILE OF DR. MEMUNAT OLAYEMI MAHMUD
Dr. Memunat Olayemi Mahmud hails from Owo, in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State
of Nigeria. The only female of four, she was born to the family of Oladugba Anaun-Kasan of Igboroko
Quarters in Owoland. Her parents, both of blessed memory, were Pa. Adesida Mahmud-Oladugba and
Mrs. Seminat Mahmud.
Young Yemi started her elementary education at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary school, Owo and
proceeded to Amunye High School in the same town for her secondary education between. She had a
brief career as a class teacher at her Alma mater, Amunye High School, Owo, between 1984 and 1985
before she got admission into the then Obafemi Awolowo University, later Ondo State University, Ado-
Ekiti in 1985 where she bagged a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Literary Studies in 1989. After
her one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Akure Secondary Commercial, Ondo State between
March, 1990 and February, 1991, she was employed in 1991, by the Ondo State Schools’ Management
Board and posted to St. Joseph’s College, Ondo as a class teacher where she taught English language and
Literature in English till March 1992 when she left the employ of the Ondo State Schools’ Management
Board to join The Polytechnic, Owo, now Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State as an Assistance
Lecturer; a place where she rose to the position of a Principal Lecturer in the English Unit, Department
of General Studies.
Her quest for knowledge and authority in her chosen discipline, English Language, took her to
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko for a Master’s Degree in English Language where she
graduated in 2006 and later, Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) in English Language with special interest in
Semiotics and Stylistics in 2014. Worthy of mention that Dr. Yemi Mahmud was further exposed to the
multi-dimensional social issues and challenges in the society as a Commissioner for Women Affairs and
Social Development. She found these challenges a must addressed and was ready to prepare herself to
adequately tackle them using her experience and professional abilities. She, therefore, in 2015 joined
Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso as a student of Social Welfare where she bagged a Master’s of
Science Degree (M.Sc.) Social Work in 2017.
'Yemi Mahmud belongs to several academic, professional, ethnic and political bodies, few of
which are: Nigerian English Studies Association (NESA), National Association of Teachers of English as
Second Language (NATRESL), Women in Technical Education (WITED), Association of Nigerian Authors
(ANA), Association of Nigerian Female Authors (ANFA), National Association of Proprietors of Private
Schools (NAPPS), and The All Owo Progressive Forum, Akure, Ondo State, a formidable group committed
to the development of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Over the years, Dr. Yemi Mahmud have gathered administrative experience as: member,
Governing Council, Amunye CAC High School, Owo, (1996 till date); Secretary, All Owo Progressive
Forum, Akure. Ondo State. (2000 – 2004); Treasurer, All Owo Progressive Forum, Akure. Ondo State.
(2005 – 2009); Secretary, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, (NAPPS), Akure South
Chapter, Akure. Ondo State. (2003 –2006); Chairman LOC of Annual International Conference of ANA
(2010); Secretary, Association of Nigerian Authors, Ondo State Chapter. (2006 – 2011); Member,
Editorial Board, Hope Newspapers (2010 – 2013), State Women Leader of Labour Party, Ondo State
(2010-2014) and the Chairman, Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ondo State Chapter from
November, 2015 till date; member, Visitation Panel to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko and
member, Governing Council, University of Medical Sciences, Laje, Ondo, Ondo State. March 2018 till
date.
Dr. ‘Yemi Mahmud is a researcher and writer of note. She has many scholarly onshore and
offshore publications to her credit. She has also attended many Local and International Academic
Conferences. As an avid writer, she has written many books covering vast areas from her discipline,
English Language, to moral, cultural and educational values. Some of her titles include: Basic Study
Guides for Learners of English language. D’ Virgo Publishers. (2005), Basic Communication Guides for
